Bright Leaves (Single)

lyrics

In the buckle of the Bible Belt
Where your voice gets lost on the wind
She was standing there in a field of white flowers
With a tattoo of blood on her hand

When a boy come along they had a little one
And her parents said it was a sin
Then one sad day in the South of the South
She was wed to him

Now they're singing their song down in the hollers
They're singing their song just for me
And their voices they sound like angels
Though they always sing off key
Always sing off key

Always knew how to hold her tongue
They teach ya that when you're young
See the serpent always follows ya, nipping at your heels
From the very day that you're born

Now, stretched out across the canvas
Paints pictures of what she sees
Pretty words she puts together
She calls it poetry

REPEAT CHORUS

Well the boy took what he could up and left
But she knew it was only for the best
Come home with the little one to an empty nest
No blood nor tears did she shed

Keeps a lock on her heart now
And she threw away the key
I'm out here digging in the dark now
Searching in a field of bright leaves
Just searching in a field of bright leaves

REPEAT CHORUS

BLURB from my dear friend Liza:

'“Bright Leaves” is the second single off of Joe Chang’s new album. It has a hint of Bruce Springsteen inspiration, which comes through in instrumentation (piano-driven with some sax on the side) and style, yet mostly Joe’s voice is what remains un-mistakenly present. The song allows us to easily wander down the road of his seamless storytelling.

In “Bright Leaves” the listener is left with a sense that the story has just begun. The chorus refrain ,“they always sing off key” beautifully captures the intimacy of detail.  Despite a familial tale with plentiful heartbreak, Joe paints us a picture that the effort of love never goes to waste, and shines through, as it remains held close to the heart of the narrator." - LIZA VICTORIA (of Lisa/Liza)
